Discover Litsea Cubeba (May Chang), the uplifting “gentle citrus.” Its cheerful, lemony aroma instantly lifts the mood and eases anxiety, while being remarkably gentle and beneficial for balancing oily or blemish-prone skin. A safe, non-photosensitive, and affordable choice for daily emotional and skincare wellness.
Litsea essential oil, commonly known as May Chang or Mountain Pepper, is steam-distilled from the small, pepper-like fruits of the Litsea cubeba tree. It is a primary botanical source for the compound citral, giving it a remarkably bright, fresh, sweet-lemony aroma that is often described as a more intense, floral version of lemon verbena or lemongrass. Despite its citrus scent, it is botanically distinct from citrus trees and is prized for both its aromatic and therapeutic properties.
An excellent natural remedy for mental fatigue, stress, and low mood. Its intensely cheerful and clarifying scent quickly invigorates the mind, promotes alertness, and combats anxiety.
Due to its high citral content, it exhibits strong antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. It is highly effective in natural cleaning solutions and diffuser blends to purify the air and surfaces.
Its astringent and antiseptic qualities make it beneficial for oily, congested, or acne-prone skin. It can help regulate sebum and cleanse pores.
Critical: It is highly phototoxic and must be used with extreme caution topically (see safety).
Its clean, penetrating citrus scent makes it a powerful natural deodorant for rooms, shoes, and laundry. It also acts as a mild insect repellent.
When diluted and massaged onto the abdomen, it may help soothe digestive cramps, bloating, and nausea due to its antispasmodic action.
Diffusion: Add 2–3 drops to a diffuser to instantly refresh and sanitize the air, boost energy, and improve focus.
Natural Cleaning: Add 10–15 drops per 16oz spray bottle with water, vinegar, and a solubilizer for an effective, uplifting all-purpose cleaner.
Topical Use (Extreme Caution & Low Dilution): If applied to skin, must be diluted to 0.5% or less (1 drop per 2 teaspoons carrier oil) and never used on skin exposed to sunlight/UV rays for 12–18 hours. Best reserved for nighttime use.
Inhalation: Inhale directly from the bottle or from a tissue for a quick pick-me-up.
High Phototoxicity: This is the most critical safety note. Litsea cubeba contains very high levels of phototoxic compounds (furanocoumarins).
→ Avoid direct sunlight or UV exposure on applied skin for at least 12-18 hours.
→ For daytime topical use, it is strongly advised to avoid it entirely or use a meticulously diluted blend on covered skin.
Skin Sensitivity: Can be a potent skin irritant even apart from phototoxicity. Always dilute heavily and perform a patch test.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Not recommended due to lack of safety data and its potent effects.
Medication Interactions: May interact with certain medications. Consult a doctor if on regular medication.
Not for Internal Use: Unless under the direct supervision of a qualified professional.
Litsea cubeba blends beautifully with:
